Sexual Intercourse

Sexual intercourse is the act of penetration of the male penis within the vagina and causing rhythmic movements until both the male and the female achieve their orgasms. Biologically, it is also known as coitus. In slang language, it has many euphemisms like making love, having sex, sleeping with someone, etc.

Human beings are only one of the few animal species (apart from dolphins and bonobo monkeys) who perform it for pleasure. The other animals perform it as a natural instinct to have offspring. Another difference is that humans can have it throughout the seasons, but other animals do so only when the female is sexually receptive. Thus human intercourse is much more different than the intercourse of other animals.

Preparedness for Sexual Intercourse

Human beings are special animals, in the sense that they can condition themselves for it. There are several factors that indicate that a person (male or female) is ready for it. Some of the factors that are physically apparent are as follows:-

(i) In men, readiness for it is most prominently displayed by the erection of the male organ. It gets normally erect during sexual stimulation also, but just prior to intercourse, it begins to exude the pre-seminal discharge, which is a lubricating fluid for the whole act.

(ii) In women, readiness for it is indicated by the lubrication of the vaginal tract. The lubrication indicates that the vagina is ready to receive the male organ. Also the nipples become erect and the breasts become firmer.

(iii) In both males and females there may be one or more of the following other indications of it readiness:-

  • Palpitation,
  • Increased blood circulation, especially in the groin area,
  • Sweating, especially from the armpits,
  • Breathlessness for some individuals,
  • Drying of the mouth, etc.
Sexual Arousal

It first begins with sexual arousal. For a satisfying intercourse it is needed that both partners be sufficiently aroused. This could be achieved through the following:-

  • The most common arousal mode is through a response to instinct. Adult humans of different sexes when kept together for a definable length of time will create a bond of mental compatibility with each other. More often than not, this could lead to it.
  • If there is romantic love between two people, then the very sight of the partner’s bodies is enough to arouse each other. This would most definitely lead to the most consensual type of sex.
  • There could be sexual titillation by watching pornographic movies or reading pornographic material. This could make a person seek out a suitable partner for it.

For a good sexual intercourse, a sexual drive in both men and women is absolutely essential. Sexual drive can be defined as the mental conditioning of the person to have an intercourse. The amount of it varies from person to person. Even in the same person, the sexual drive shows fluctuating patterns. The following are some factors that inhibit it in people and lead them to have poor sexual intercourse:-

  • Alcoholism and smoking
  • Use of drugs
  • Disease
  • Mental stress
  • Dislike for the partner

Its Mechanics

The mechanics of it are basically the same in all couples; and they almost always lead to discharge of semen from the male penis into the female vagina. However, for an elaboration, the processes involved in it can be divided into the following:-

(i) The physical changes are the first to occur. These are the erection of the male organ, and the lubrication of the vagina in the female.

(ii) In most cases, there is foreplay. It is the touching and fondling of each other’s bodies before the actual penetration. The length and quality of foreplay varies vastly according to personal preferences and the comfort level that the partners share. There are different methods of foreplay as described below:-

      • Fondling each other’s bodies, especially the breasts and nipples in both male and female,
      • Kissing in different ways and different places, including deep-throat kissing,
      • Fellatio, i.e. oral stimulation of the male organ and scrotum by the female partner,
      • Cunnilingus, i.e. oral stimulation of the female genitals by the male partner,
      • Stimulating the anuses of each other, etc.
      • Each couple has their own variations to foreplay. Couples may also discover some mutual fetishes and then play accordingly. Fetish heightens the sexual experience if both partners are willing.

(iii) The actual penetration begins after foreplay. The male inserts his organ into the female’s vagina. The couples may adopt one of the several sexual positions that are suitable to them.

(iv) Either the male or the female provides the friction to the male organ. This is done by repeatedly moving the male organ back and forth within the vagina. This can be achieved by either the male or the female partner. The movement of the male organ also arouses the female clitoris. Ejaculation takes place, leading to orgasm of the male. The female orgasm occurs if she is properly aroused.

A fully successful sexual encounter is one in which both the male and the female achieve their orgasms.

Problems in Sexual Intercourse

(i) Dyspareunia means painful sexual intercourse. This occurs in some men and women. The pain can occur during any stage of the lovemaking or even after it.

(ii) The leading problem with it is lack of proper mental condition. A person who is not fully mentally prepared for it will regard it as a purely mechanical activity and will not satisfy the partner.
