Weak Erection

Weak erection is biologically called erectile dysfunction or impotence. It is a common male sexual ailment and is more observed in older males than in younger ones. It can be any one of the following two things:-

(i) The man is unable to get an erection at all

(ii) The man gets an erection, but is unable to retain that erection for penetration during sex.

Thus, ED can be both a physiological and a psychological ailment. A person with physiological ED will never have had an erection throughout his life; while a person with psychological erectile dysfunction will have erections, but will not be able to sustain them. In order to understand why some men have weak erections, it is first important to understand how erections occur.

How Do Men Get Erections?

The male organ is an organ that is made up of spongy tissue which runs in a chamber called as the corpus cavernosa. This chamber is surrounded by another chamber called the tunica albuginea. Erection is affected by the brain. When the man is sexually aroused, or when he is stimulated by touching it, then the corpus cavernosa relaxes. This makes the spongy tissues expand as they get filled by blood. Due to this the organ expands, and an erection is obtained.

When the arousal is lost, then the organ becomes flaccid, due to which the inflow and outflow channels of the blood are cut off. This disgorges the blood from the corpus cavernosa, and the erection is lost. A man can get erection within a few seconds spontaneously, and can lose it within a few seconds also. In normal males, (i.e. those who don't have the problem of weak erections) it becomes hard and remains hard during the entire sexual act, meaning, until orgasm is achieved. Normal males can achieve multiple erections (and thus multiple orgasms) in a single sex session.

Causes of Weak Erections

Some of the main causes of ED are mentioned below:-

(i) Diabetes mellitus is perhaps the most leading cause of ED observed in men. They are observed in as many as 35 to 50% of diabetic men.

(ii) Other diseases that can cause ED are neurological disorders, cardiovascular disorders, atherosclerosis and multiple sclerosis among others. These diseases along with diabetes mellitus constitute 70% of the total weak erection complaints of the world.

(iii) Addictions such as alcoholism, drug addictions and smoking also cause them. The main reason for these addictions to cause it is that they tamper with the nervous system of the man, thus disallowing the impulses to go freely from the brain to the male organ.

(iv) They can be caused due to a large number of therapeutic drugs that act on the nervous system. This list includes antihistamines, tranquilizers, appetite suppressants, anti-depressants, etc.

(v) Surgeries in the groin area can numb the nerve endings in that region, thus making it unable for impulses to reach the male organ. Prostate cancer surgery and bladder removal surgery are notable in this category.

(vi) One very important cause, though it occupies a low percentage of the total male population with them, is the nervousness before sex. Men who are nervous will not be able to get an erection.

(vii) Age also plays a very important factor. As the age advances beyond 40, there is decrease in the hardness of the penis during erection; and by the age of sixty five years, most men cannot get an erection at all.

(viii) Hormonal imbalances can also cause ED. The absence or deficiency of the male secondary sex characteristic hormone, testosterone, will disable the man from getting substantial erections.

Diagnosing the Problem

There are several laboratory tests that can determine whether or not a person is suffering from ED. Some of them are briefly given below:-

(i) It may be seen whether the male organ responds to touch. If it becomes erect when touched, then perhaps the problem of weak erection during lovemaking is due to nervousness.

(ii) The person can be monitored during sleep, especially during the rapid eye movement. Most men get erections in their sleep at this time.

(iii) The complete medical history of the man can be checked, along with the list of the medicines taken by the man. This will identify any drug that interferes with healthy erections.

Treatment of Weak Erections

ED can be symptomatically treated. Following are some of the methods used:-

(i) Weak erections that occur because of drugs taken by the man can be easily reversed by stopping the intake of the drug or by prescribing an alternative drug without the side effect of ED.

(ii) Men who do not get erections during sexual encounters can be counseled and taught the right way to tackle the situation.

(iii) There are several vitalizers available that claim to solve the problem. Some of the chief ones are:-

      • Sildenafil (Viagra)
      • Vardenafil (Levitra)
      • Tadalafil (Cialis).

(iv) Ayurveda also has a large number of medicines that are used in the treatment of ED. Some of the very popular ones are:

      • Shilajit
      • Ashwagandha
      • Ginseng
      • Saw Palmetto
      • Avena sativa
      • Tribulus terrestris

Definitely, the problem of it is one that cannot be openly spoken about. Hence, the victims of this disorder can visit their doctors and get the right way out of this sticky situation.
